I open the letter to see what secrets it might hold

Secrets, hah that's cute. No, but the letter is very formal looking. Obviously it has been written by royalty due to the presence of the seal which you can recognize as the seal of the kingdom of the province you are in. The letter states exactly as follows:
"Lord Rayleigh, it is with a heart full of sorrow that I write this letter to inform you that your son passed whilst protecting the queen. She has ordered for his remains to be delivered to you and would wish to attend his burial as well as to personally apologize for this tragedy. She will be sending her raven to deliver this message and receive reply. She would also like to invite you to stay at Fort Wintersmorn as she believes this attack was a personal one and fears for the rest of the rulers in the province."
The rest of the writing is marked out but you can barely make out the name of the sender, which reads "Her Majesty, Queen Erevan Ilesere."
You do know this to be the high queen of the current province you are in. It would appear from the letter that some assassins are attempting to eliminate the royals of the country.

Hmm I wonder where this could lead

It can lead to almost anywhere you want it to lead. What you do with that information is up to you. Whether you share it with the group and use it to make a plan or just make it a personal thing.

I take the letter from Zni and read it, after reading it I fold it back up and stick it in my bag of holding

You told me to look at it, besides, this would appear to be the Lord to which this letter was addressed
Djarra walks over and carefully lifts the crown off the skeleton's head, as he does a thought flickers across his mind: Why does this room and building in fact, seem untouched by the goblins...
The thought quickly passes as he inspects the crown.

Djarra does taking that crown seem like the best idea? What if the towns people believe we killed him?

Oh good, one of you finally took notice.
You do find it puzzling that this entire building is free of goblin intrusion and even lacks evidence of the gnoll. But there really is no telling why because the room is devoid of any magical effects that may have prevented the goblins from entering.

this guy is all bone, he's been dead quite awhile now, I highly doubt the townsfolk will think we killed him, now do something useful and help me search this building for markings
Djarra wraps the crown up with any fabric he can find lying around, then proceeds to search the entrance to the building for any markings or hints as to why the goblins stayed out

Anyone involved in the search make a religion check.
It is still pretty dark you know. The fires have burnt out and the structures that once stood are nothing more than cinders now. If you don't have low-light vision it dark vision, you'll need to light a torch or get a sunrod out. To look for more physical marks that is or if you intend to leave the camp.

Before we start searching I'll make a couple torches using materials laying around and some of the oil I purchased earlier

Much like any other skill check, you roll a d20 and add your religion mod. There are two places to find it on your character sheet. The first age and the fourth page. For example: jEiISeAn1d20+13 if Nidhogg were to roll religion. But if you guys roll bad I suppose i'll just have him tell you.1d20+13
